About Le Havre

Le Havre is well known as an important port. During the Second World War 80% of the town centre was destroyed and it took 20 years for the reconstruction work to be finished.

Le Havre was transformed; by renowned Modernist architect Auguste Perret, into an "ecstasy of concrete". His innovative use of the material; constructing intricate columns and oriental trellises has earned Le Havre the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Le Havre is also home to the Malraux Museum which houses the largest collection of Impressionist paintings outside Paris. The 2km sand and stone beach, located close to the city centre, is a haven for watersport enthusiasts and is particularly welcoming to disabled tourists: as a special device, a “tiralo” is provided free of charge to help get to the sea. There are also hot showers and a children’s playground.
