LD Lines' Western
English Channel
operations
commenced in
October
2005,
operating between
Portsmouth and
Le Havre. This
service was
introduced
following the
withdrawal of
P and O Ferries'
longstanding
operation on this
very popular
route. Fares are
extremely
competitive in
comparison to
other alternatives
departing from
Portsmouth on the
Western Channel.

The journey time
from Le Havre to
Caen is only one
hour but the
savings for a
family of four
travelling in
August (for
example) are more
than 50% of the
closest
alternative.
There is one
sailing per day in
each direction,
with the
Portsmouth-Le
Havre sailing
taking place
overnight. This
uses one vessel,
the
MS Norman
Spirit.
On 28 March 2008
it was announced
that a second ship
would be
introduced on the
Le Havre route to
operate alongside
the Norman
Spirit. The
new ship,
presently referred
to as the
Norman Voyager,
is currently under
construction in
Italy and will
enter service in
November 2008.
Therefore, from
November 2008
there will be a
twice daily
service from
Portsmouth to Le
Havre - one
overnight and one
during the day. As
soon as schedules
are published, the
crossings will be
available to book
online through our
website.
Portsmouth is
easily accessible
by road and rail.
By rail, you
should disembark
at Portsmouth
Harbour Station -
3 miles from the
port with a
shuttle bus
connecting you to
the terminals.
Portsmouth has the
best road
connections of all
UK ferry ports.
The M275 brings
the national
motorway network
direct to the port
and a new exit
road gives drivers
an easy route
north from the
port along with
easy access to
central
Portsmouth.
Le Havre is
linked to the rest
of the country by
the Normandy
Bridge. There are
2 ferry terminals
in Le Havre: the
Terminal de Grande
Bretagne is close
to the rail and
bus stations in
the
Bassin de
la
Citadelle
and operates LD
sailings.
Le Havre is the
busiest French
port on the
Western Channel
and has easy
access to all
points south, west
and south west in
France.
